Bandhavgarh National Park is one of the popular national parks in India located in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh. The park derives its name from the most prominent hillock of the area, which was said to be given by Lord Rama to his brother Lakshmana to keep a watch on Lanka. Hence the name Bandhavgarh. Rich mixed forests consisting of Sal, Saga, Salai, and Durbin, with dense bamboo thickets, occur in many places spread in an area of 694 Sq.kms approx. Bandhavgarh has one of the highest density of Bengal tigers known in the world and is around 65-70 in this park. The first white tiger was captured in this region in 1951.

There are 39 caves in the Bandhavgarh fort and in the surrounding hillocks up to a radius of about 5 km. The oldest cave dates from the 1st century. These together provide Bandhavgarh its rich biodiversity and Historical significance. With the tiger at the apex of the food chain, it contains 37 species of mammals including Leopard, Wild Dogs also known as Dhole in local language Jackals, Jungle Cats, and Sloth Bear. According to forest officials, there are more than 300 species of birds, about 80 species of butterflies, and a number of reptiles. There are also antelopes like Chowsingha/Four Horned Antelope and the Neel Gai, it also has a good population of Indian Gaur thanks to the efforts of the Forest department.
